(BROWNSVILLE) – Looking on paper, everyone thought that the Edcouch-Elsa and Brownsville Veterans boys’ basketball game was going to be a high scoring affair.

But the final score was quite the contrary.

E-E completely slowed down the game by using ball control and their plan worked to a “T” as they opened District 32-5A play with a 42-34 win.

“Our plan was to control the ball and to cut down on Brownsville Veterans possessions as well,” said Jackets head coach Lalo Rios. “We were able to frustrate them on offense with our press and did a good job of keeping the ball out of their hands as well.”

“Our defense was the key to the win today and left Brownsville with a big road win over a tough Vets team.”

Jeremiah Caballero was the leading scorer for Edcouch-Elsa as he finished with a team high 13 points.

Edcouch-Elsa opens district play at 1-0 and will face another stiff test on Tuesday night against Mercedes with game time set for 1 p.m.
