(BROWNSVILLE) – It’s been a while since Edcouch-Elsa head girls’ basketball coach Daniel Richardson has smiled.
In fact, the last time on record was the Brownsville St. Joseph game which was in November.
But after Tuesday night’s 50-32 win over Brownsville Lopez, Richardson had the biggest grin on his face.
“It feels good to smile on the sideline,” Richardson said.
The Lady Jackets put together the type of effort Richardson has been waiting to see as their pressure defense caused Lopez headaches all night long.
As for their offense, E-E scored 13 in the first quarter and then scored a game high 15 in the second which gave them a commanding 28-7 lead. Nyra Jimenez, Haley Villalpando and Maddie Trevino were the main catalysts in the scoring department for E-E in the first half as they scored a combined 20 points and finished the night as the leading scorers. Jimenez finished the night with a team high 13 points while Villalpando and Trevino each scored nine.
Lopez’s offense did come alive in the second half as they scored 25 second half points while Edcouch-Elsa scored 22.
Overall, Richardson was happy with his team’s all-around effort and hopes this win will fuel a late run with the second half of district play beginning next week.
“I am very excited with how our pressure defense played tonight and liked how we were patient on offense and waited for things to develop,” said Richardson. “Also, we got some solid all-around play from the girls off the bench which I was happy to see.”
“We now improve to 2-4 in district play and the girls were definitely fired up after the game. This win is a big confidence booster going into Friday’s game against Porter which happens to be the last of the first half. If we can pick up a win over Porter, we go into the second half at 3-4 and feel good about our chances of getting back in the race.”
