(MERCEDES) – The Mercedes Lady Tigers soccer team sure was glad to be home after a long road trip to Waxahachie over the weekend.
And coming into their first home game on Tuesday night against La Feria, Mercedes wanted nothing more than to put forth a good showing while giving the fans their first win of the season.
The Lady Tigers were stout on the defensive end as they held La Feria to a total of four shots on goal and got a solid effort from their goalie all night long.
As for their offense, Mercedes was aggressive with the ball and had their chances to score by taking 14 shots on goal.
Out of those 14 shots, the Lady Tigers had a golden opportunity to punch one in within the first five minutes of the game which would have given them the lead.
But the ball pushed just wide of the net which kept the game scoreless.
La Feria, on the other hand, was able to convert on one of their four shots as they were able to get a loose ball in the middle and worked their way through defenders which caused a one-on-one opportunity with the goalie.
The Lionettes were able to slip the ball past the Mercedes goalie which gave them a 1-0 lead in the second half.
That lone goal was just enough as La Feria held off attacks by Mercedes to grab a 1-0 lead.
“We had our chances to score tonight but just couldn’t seem to get the ball in the net,” said Mercedes head soccer coach Roel Quiroz. “The one thing that I have noticed so far in the season is we have opportunities on offense to score but just can’t seem to finish.”
“We have to work on those things and figure out what needs to be done in order to convert on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, I feel we are right where we need to be and tonight we played great. We just need to continue to work and improve and I know it will eventually all come together.”
