(PORT ISABEL) – Edcouch-Elsa head boys’ soccer coach Mauro Tijerina is literally going through a youth movement in 2018.
The Jackets are loaded with underclassmen and have only one senior on the team which Tijerina feels will be tough to contend with in a tough District 32-5A.
“We compete in what’s call the ‘District of Death’ as many of the other teams in 32-5A are absolutely loaded with experience,” said Tijerina. “We are a very young team composed with quite a few underclassmen which is a disadvantage for us.”
“With that said, we have to use these non-district and tournament games to gain some valuable experience and grow up as well.”
On Friday night, the young Jackets took a big step forward in the growth process as two freshmen scored all four goals and one of them accounted for three which gave E-E a 4-0 win over Port Isabel.
Isaac Fernandez completed the hat trick as he scored on three free kicks while Diego Guerrero scored his lone goal on one free kick.
“These two freshmen have been phenomenal at practice so far and both know how to score,” Tijerina said. “At the tournament, we never had an opportunity to score on a free kick and tonight all four of our goals were scored on free kicks.”
“I was very happy with the way the kids responded and a lot of kids stepped up on the defensive end tonight. Usually teams have wins, but the score doesn’t reflect how they play on the field. But our kids got the win tonight and the score definitely reflected how well they played on the field.”
