(ELSA) – Coming into Friday night’s game against Brownsville Porter, the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets needed to find some way to end their two-game losing streak.
“We talked about the importance of this game against Porter and what the loss could do to us in the standings,” said head coach Lalo Rios. “We could not afford to go on a three-game losing streak because it would put us in a bad position in the standings in district play.”
“The kids took it to heart and were not about to lose this game.”
The Jackets offense finally came to life after posting two subpar performances and the defense continued to play well as they held Porter to less than 50 points which combined turned into a huge 54-45 win.
Joseph Gonzalez had another big game as the senior nailed four three-pointers and finished the night with 20 points.
“Joseph (Gonzalez) put the team on his back tonight and he produced another 20-point outing,” Rios said. “The guys respect him and feed off his play. Because of that, I saw more confidence on the offensive side of the ball and that’s exactly what we needed.”
“Defensively, we played really good and held Porter to 45 points. Lately we have been able to hold teams under 50 points a game which is a good thing. Overall I was very happy with tonight’s performance and this was a great win in the standings.”
Edcouch-Elsa moves their district record to 3-2 and find themselves in a four-way tie for second place.
“This win was huge because now we find ourselves in a four-way tie for second place,” said Rios. “Now we need to go take care of business against Donna North on Tuesday night and that would put us at 4-2 which definitely helps our chances in a very tight playoff chase.”
