(MERCEDES) – Mercedes Head Basketball Coach Rick Trevino was determined to break a string of rocky first quarter streaks.
Trevino emphasized that his team needed to be self-aware and to hit the floor running and lucky for him, they did that and more by defeating Donna North 76-36 on Friday night.
Jordan Ovalle and Brandon Lozoya sprang the Tigers towards victory by scoring a solid 22 points each by the end of the 3rd quarter.
The Tigers fierce hunger towards steals, rebounds and sharpshooting ability helped set the tempo on the night as they scored an impressive 27 points at the end of the first quarter and that played a big factor as they went into the half with a commanding 31-point lead.
Mercedes went on a 13-point run in the third quarter which set the tone for the second half.
As for the Chiefs, they were no match for Mercedes as they failed to get a consecutive rhythm going in the final two quarters of play.
Entering the final quarter, the Tigers went to their bench and they were able to help maintain their comfortable lead while holding off the Chiefs from spearing their way back.
“In our last seven games, teams have jumped on us and we just couldn’t seem to climb our way back,” said Trevino. “Tonight, we were able to turn the tables and our lead eased up the pressure on the boys. The guys were able to do what they do best and that’s play basketball.”
“Being able to jump ahead like we did helped give us the win and I am very proud of the boys. They have been working hard and deserved it. They knew what they had to do and got the job done.”
Trevino added that his bench has been playing sound all year and hopes they continue to stay disciplined and smart in their upcoming games.
Mercedes gets themselves back in playoff contention with the win as they improve to 2-3 in District 32-5A. Next up on the docket is a date with Donna High as both teams will tangle on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
