(BROWNSVILLE) – Going into the overtime period against Brownsville Porter, Edcouch-Elsa head basketball coach Lalo Rios relayed an important message to his team.
“This is a playoff type game and we could quite be in possibilities like this down the road,” Rios said. “We need to start learning how to win games like this and need to do it now against Porter.”
The Jackets responded to the challenge brought on by Rios as they outscored the Cowboys 11-3 in the extra period and ended up securing a 54-46 victory in a contest with major postseason implications.
“The kids stepped up and found a way to get fouled in the overtime period,” said Rios. “They made their free-throws and stayed under control which got us the win.”
E-E officially seals up the second seed with the win as they improve to 9-3 in District 32-5A.
“Sealing up the second spot is a big plus for us because now we can start preparing for our first-round opponent,” Rios said. “Also, we can work on polishing some things up on our end and focus on what needs to be done to be successful.”
“Now don’t get me wrong. We need to remain focused on our final two district opponents and take care of business against those teams, that way we can go into the playoffs winners of nine games our of our last ten.”
