(DONNA) – Going into the half with a 12-point lead, Edcouch-Elsa head boys’ basketball coach Lalo Rios analyzed what kept the Donna North Chiefs in the contest and what needed to be done to fix it.
“The Chiefs were playing well in the first half and that’s because they were converting on their free-throw attempts,” said Rios. “We were fouling them quite a bit and a lot of that was because we were pressing a lot.”
“We made a few adjustments and decided it was time to change the flow of the game.”
Those adjustments worked in their favor and the Jackets were able to have a huge second half which led them to a 69-31 win over Donna North.
“We were able to control Donna North from going to the free-throw line as much as they did in the first half and forced them to try and break our press,” Rios said. “We forced them to make quite a few turnovers in the second half due to our trap defense and got a ton of steals which converted into some easy baskets for us.”
Edcouch-Elsa has now won eight out of their last nine district games and looks to extend that streak if they can close out the regular season with a win on Tuesday night against Donna High.
“We want to keep that momentum going into the playoffs and our main goal is to go 9-1 at the end of the season,” said Rios. “We have to face a tough Donna High team who is fighting for a playoff spot and Tuesday night’s game will have that postseason type atmosphere.”
“But we have played well at home and hopefully that will help us carry over that momentum and grab a win.”
