2018 Girls High School Basketball Playoff Preview

(LA JOYA) – When looking at Rio Grande City, one thing truly stood out to Mercedes head girls basketball coach Santiago Rivas.
Amaya is the spark plug that fuels the Lady Rattlers engine as the 5’11 senior is one of the best players in the entire Rio Grande Valley and can back it up with her 24.1 points per game, 9.8 rebounds per game and 3.4 blocks per game.
“Jocy Amaya is hands down one of the best players in the Valley,” Rivas said. “She is a big girl and can flat out play.”
“She is the type of player that can shoot the ball really well and she has some excellent footwork as well. We are truly going to have our hands full against her.”
Lucky for Rivas, he has a few wrinkles in his feather as he possesses three big girls, a stout defense, a win over RGC earlier in the season and is currently riding a five-game win streak which he hopes will all work in his favor as the Lady Tigers will take on the Lady Rattlers in the Class 5A Bi-District round of the playoffs on Monday night at La Joya High School with game time set for 7 p.m.
“We have a few things going for us coming into this game,” said Rivas. “We have three big girls in Roslynn (Rodriguez), Mika (Vento) and Reanna (De La Torre) who will face a tough task of defending Amaya. But these girls are up for the challenge. Another big thing is we pulled out a tough win over them in a tournament game and hopefully that will carry over to this one.”
“Coming in we have won five straight games and have a ton of momentum which is huge. Our plan is to rely on our tough defensive play while trying to contain the other players on RGC. We know Amaya will probably get her points. But we will try to defend her the best we can. Our game plan is set and the girls are ready to go. If we can execute on both sides of the ball and play to our potential, we are going to be fine.”
