2018 Boys High School Basketball Bi-District Playoff Preview

(SHARYLAND) – When analyzing who Rio Grande City compares to in District 32-5A, Edcouch-Elsa head basketball coach Lalo Rios was quick to answer.
“Rio Grande City reminds me a lot of Brownsville Pace,” Rios said. “Both of them have similar styles and have big kids underneath as well. Pace had a kid that’s 6’4 and Rio has a kid that is 6’8.”
“Rio also has guards that can shoot and likes to get out and run in transition just like Pace does.”
Rios knows that if Rio Grande City is indeed like Brownsville Pace, his team is in for quite the challenge as the Rattlers and the Jackets will meet up in the Class 5A Bi-District round of the playoffs on Monday at 7 p.m. at Sharyland Pioneer High School.
“We struggled against Pace and have to figure out a way to play against Rio Grande City. Myself and the coaches are working on putting together just the right game plan to be able to play with them and be able to shoot with them as well.”
If there’s one thing that Edcouch-Elsa has in their favor coming into this game, it’s that they are on a bit of a hot streak. The Jackets have won nine out of their last 10 games and Rios hopes that will fuel his team coming into the playoffs.
“The kids are excited about the win streak we are on and I will say they have been playing good basketball during that stretch,” said Rios. “They have stayed level headed and that’s going to be the biggest factor if we are going to have success in the postseason.”
“They have been fired up over the last couple of days at practice and are asking us to push them to the very limits. They are thirsty to win and are ready to take it up a notch.”
