(BROWNSVILLE) With 15 minutes left in the contest, the Edcouch-Elsa Lady Jackets were well on their way to picking up a big 2-0 win over Brownsville Porter to close the first half on Friday night.
But then a couple of bad breaks hurt E-E as Porter scored on a penalty kick with 10 minutes remaining in the second half and then tied the match on a free kick with 17 seconds left in the contest which gave them the momentum needed to pick up a win in penalty kicks.
“That first goal scored gave Porter some hope and then the second one completely shifted all the momentum in their favor,” said Edcouch-Elsa head girls coach Juan Romero. “Then Porter was able to beat us in the penalty kick portion of the match.”
“I do question those calls in which Porter got a penalty kick and a free kick as well. But the fact of the matter is Porter capitalized on their opportunities and that resulted in the win. No matter the outcome, I am proud of the girls and the fight they showed tonight.”
The Lady Jackets end the second half of play at 3-4 in District 32-5A and will begin the second half on Friday night against Donna North.
“We are well within striking distance when it comes to the playoff chase,” said Romero. “But we have to do our jobs in the second half and the girls have to be all in the rest of the way.”
Meagan Acevedo and Terry Gallegos scored the goals for E-E on Friday night.
