(DONNA) – To everyone in the stands, the Edcouch-Elsa Lady Jackets seemed to play a nearly perfect game in their 20-0 District 32-5A opener against Donna North on Tuesday night.
But as for Lady Jackets head softball coach Ruth Flores, she found a flaw in her team’s overall performance.
“Our pitcher Ocean Gomez had a chance to throw a perfect game tonight but ended up walking three batters,” Flores said. “I strive for her to do better just like all of the other girls and I know she can be better than that.”
“Don’t get me wrong. Ocean threw a great game today and did her job on the mound. But I want her to know that the better she does on the mound, the better we do as a team. And even though we got the win tonight, we have to continue to work hard and play better so we can be the team to go the farthest than and other team here at Edcouch-Elsa.”
E-E struck early as they erupted for five runs in the top of the first inning to take the early lead.
Kailey Gonzales scored the first two runs for the Lady Jackets thanks to her RBI-double and crossing home plate on an RBI-single by Samantha Montelongo.
Then Montelongo and Destiny Munoz came home on back-to-back fielding errors by Donna North and Odessa Mata scored the final run of the inning on a bases loaded walk.
Mata then helped the Lady Jackets push their lead to 8-0 as her double to left brought home Sara Sanchez and Kat Garcia in the top half of the second and again scored on a bases loaded walk.
Sieanna Ortiz then came home on a wild pitch and Bri Gonzalez scored on an RBI-single by Gonzales which extend the Lady Jackets lead to 10-0 going into the bottom of the second.
Edcouch-Elsa continued their surge offensively in the third inning as they tacked on 10 runs which sealed the deal.
“It’s always a good start when you get a win in your district opener,” said Flores. “We have huge goals that have been set before the season and our goal is to attain them.”
“Tonight’s win was a step forward in our second goal and I am proud of the girls and their performance tonight.”
