Jackets Come Out of the Gates Firing in District Opening Win

(DONNA) – Edcouch-Elsa traveled to the “Chiefs Territory” on Tuesday night with high expectations after winning the District 32-5A last year.

And with 5 returning starters coming back in 2018, the Yellowjackets looked very determined and came into their district opener with high spirits as they took on Donna North in a crucial baseball contest.

A combination of Edcouch-Elsa’s consistent power hits and Joseph Gonzalez’s pair of RBI’s led them to scoring a pair of runs in the first and second innings while defensively, the Jackets were able to smother the Chiefs while allowing only one run to give them a 4-1 lead.

Defensive game play and solid strikeouts took control in the third and fourth inning on both ends of the field.

A single by Elian Lopez and a miscue from the Chiefs helped E-E increase their lead to 6-1 after five complete innings.

In the sixth, the Chiefs were able to put together a string of hits which resulted in two runs and helped them cut the lead in half.

But the mental errors kept Donna North from getting into a comfortable rhythm as the Yellow Jackets added a run in the top of the seventh to build a 7-3 lead.

E-E continued to apply the pressure in the seventh as they scored three more runs in the seventh due to multiple errors by the Chiefs which gave them a 10-3 win.

“The kids played Jacket baseball to the best of their ability tonight,” said E-E head coach Ryan Garza. “Donna North is a good team and hats off to them from giving us a solid game.”

“We were able to carry over the momentum and higher spirits from the Tony Rico tournament held this past weekend in Weslaco.”
