(EDCOUCH) – The fate of a possible playoff berth for the Edcouch-Elsa Lady Jackets soccer team sat right in their hands Monday afternoon.
Going into their match against Brownsville Lopez, E-E needed a win and one in their last game of the season next week against Brownsville Porter to have a chance to seal up the fourth spot.
Head soccer coach Juan Romero gave his team a speech during warm-ups that resonated through the entire game.
“Finish with nothing left. We need our bench to come onto the field in rhythm and have the ability to maintain composure if we are going to be successful against Lopez.”
The Lady Jackets swarmed out of “The Hive” attacking and looking determined to keep their playoff hopes alive.
A sharpshooting goal by Sandra Perez in the first 30 seconds of play let the Lady Lobos know they were in for a sting as E-E took the early lead.
The Lady Lobos were able to round up the pack and tie it up with 14 minutes in play in the first half.
From there, it was a back and forth affair during the first half of play.
But the Lady Jackets let the Lobos know whose house it was.
With swift ball control and strategic power plays by the Acevedo sisters (Madeline and Meagan), Edcouch-Elsa swarmed Lopez out of scoring range ending the first half tied at one.
The Lady Jackets and Lady Lobos came out of the half equally as aggressive by battling for every possession with near misses on both ends which turned the match into a nail biter.
Marissa Rangel was able to capitalize on a penalty shot giving the lead back to E-E with 10 minutes left in the contest.
At the eight-minute mark, a power play by the Acevedo sisters (pass from Madeline to Meagan for the goal) sealed the 3-1 win for the Jackets.
“Our Jackets played strong and did not stop going after the ball,” said Romero. “We defeated a well-coached Brownsville Lopez Team and our playoff hopes are still in grasp as we have Brownsville Porter next.”
