(EDCOUCH) – It was a packed house at Joey Torres Softball field as the Edcouch-Elsa Lady Jackets and Brownsville Lopez Lady Lobos faced off while attempting to secure the third spot in the District 32-5A on Tuesday night.
Consecutive three and outs on both ends in multiple innings showcased the caliber of these playoff bound teams early in the contest as they were scoreless.
In the bottom of the third, the Lady Jackets drew first blood with a stunning triple by Ocean Gomez and a crucial hit by Odessa Mata which gave them the first run of the night.
The Lady Lobos responded with consecutive hits which scored a pair of runs and a Lady Jacket mental error resulted in three runs for the visitors.
E-E swarmed back in the fourth by squeezing in a run which trimmed Lopez’s lead to one.
The Lady Lobos hit all cylinders by scoring four runs in the top of the fifth and extended their lead to 7-2.
The seasoned Lady Jackets showed poise and a willingness to fight by shutting down the Lobos with a pair of three and outs in the 6th and 7th innings.
In the seventh, E-E’s bats got hot as they converted into five runs which sent the contest into extra innings.
During the 8th inning, the Lady Lobos began to hit the ball aggressively and with bases loaded, they were able to hit an inside the park grand slam down center field to retake the lead once again 11-7.
But the relentless home team were going to do whatever it took to protected “The Hive” and were able to tie it up thanks to a four-run bottom of the eighth.
Emotions were running extremely high in the stands and on the field as the 9th inning took place. Gomez pitched with a burning desire that resulted in a quick three and out for E-E.
The opportunity for the Lady Jackets to strike and win the game came with a breath taking single that brought in the winning run, thus giving the Jackets the win with the final score of 12-11.
With the win, E-E seals up the third spot in District 32-5A as they improve to 8-5.
“Our girls wanted that third spot and coming from behind showed that they really wanted it,” said E-E head coach Ruth Flores. “They weren’t about to give up and fought hard for this win.”
“Hats off to the Lady Lobos because they are an amazing team and we will definitely see them in the playoffs. But tonight was our night and I am so proud of the girls.”
